About the show:

“A Poetic Tribute to our She-Roes & Heroes of Poetry” celebrates the accomplishments of those who have paved the way for other Latino poets. The event will showcase talents of published and emerging poets of Puerto Rico and New York, with topics that broad in range. Voices that are passionate and experiences that are personal and sometimes painful. Each artist brings a unique style and vision to the stage. The listeners will relate to the challenges that some have faced and recognize the accomplishments that others have achieved.

About the show:
“Visions of Puerto Rico & Puerto Rican Pride” Celebrates Puerto Rican culture through Photography. The show will include more than fifty works by emerging and established artists from Puerto Rico, Miami Fl. and New York City. Each artist brings a unique style and vision. These artists have discovered the beauty, tales and the history to their culture in which has been incorporated into their craft of photography. Some of the pieces will depict Community, Urban settings, Music, Nature, Family, Politics and Spirituality. The photos will embrace the cultural empowerment of the Puerto Ricans and their pride. The photos will evoke emotion, feeling and discussion. We have bridged a gap between the Puerto Ricans on the Island and the Puerto Ricans out side of the island and this exhibit is the result of that connection.

Art is an expression of the unconscious and is dedicated to the free expression of
feeling.

Please join me in "A Special Tribute to Poet and Puerto Rican Patriot Juan Antonio Corretjer." I'm collaborating with poets & dancers Myrna Nieves, Nancy Mercado, Jose Angel Figueroa, Rafael Landron & Hilda Pantoja-Rivera, founder of Danza Fiesta. Hilda will do a dance interpretation of "Oubao-Moin". Profs. Jose R. Hernandez (Assoc. Dean) and Jose Irizzary, who knew Corretjer personally will be doing the "Personal Testimonials."

From the 1970's through the mid-1990's Women's poetry in particular, continued to gain in richness and technical maturity. Poetry that addressed issues such as struggles between men and women, family, war, violence and cultures were written and performed by powerful women. Now these women have brought it to the front lines, all are significant, brilliant and original. These ladies are innovative in the use of language and structure.

Warning!!! Some of these poems will serve as a wake up call.

Yemaya's Wisdom: I nurture, heal, touch, bless, comfort and make whole that which is incomplete. I am within you and you need only look inside yourself to find my eternal presence.

Yemaya is a West African creation goddess, often depicted as a mermaid. She is associated with the moon, the ocean and female mysteries. Typically portrayed as a beautiful woman, Yemaya governs the household and intervenes in women's affairs. She is a merciful goddess, invoked by women for aid in childbirth, love and healing. She rules over the conception and birth of children and ensures their safety during childhood. As a creation goddess, Yemaya's womb spilled forth the fourteen Yoruba goddesses and gods, and the breaking of her uterine waters caused a great flood, which created the oceans. From her body the first human woman and man, who became the parents of all mortal beings on earth, were born.
